Who invented makeup?
For thousand of years, in the history of woman. We have always been vain creatures. They have experience great pain and even danger in their quest to be beautiful.
The earliest makeup that was recorded is found in the first dynasty of egypt. Uguent was excavated from their tombs and it was used to prevent dryness of the skin and also to keep it soft and supple. The kohl was already being used as a makeup tool to highlight their eyelashes and to add color to their lids.
In the bible of the new testament, there are pictures depicting men and women painting their faces. Fashion has evolved through the centuries.
In Europe in the middle ages it was fashionable to have a very pale face as this was thought to signify wealth. Eyelashes and lids were painted with kohl whilst chalk and white lead were used to whiten the skin. Henna was used and still is for coloring the hair.
During the 18th century the wearing of rouge and red lipstick became fashionable. Many men at this time also used rouge to highlight their complexion.
It is interesting to note that women during these times continually used lead and mercury based make up in an effort to make themselves more attractive even though it was known that these products could be and often were lethal.
However, the Victorian age brought about a change of attitude towards makeup with their prim and properness although it did not stop women using home made recipes for face masks and cleansing.
In the early 20th century women began to coat their eyelashes with petroleum jelly or hot beads of wax. Mascara as we know it was first created by Maybeline, and Max Factor introduced his ‘pancake’ make up, a thick variation of foundation base used by models in the 60’s.
As time passed the attitude to wearing make up has changed. It is now the norm to wear full facial makeup every day although there are very strict governing safety rules for the manufacturing bodies.
In todays world anything goes as far as fashion trends. Today’s make up is totally brilliant. If you wake up in the morning looking like death a few dabs with a make up brush can transform you and give you the confidence to face the world knowing you look your best.
There are very few natural beauties in the world so don't be afraid of resorting to make up to get that dewy look.
Even Cleopatra used make up to entice her man to bed.
