Make Up Foundation Terms
Light-diffusing: Ths means that the make up foundation contains special pigments that reflects light thus giving an optical illusion of a younger skin. This property can be found in different strength of cover, from medium to heavy and in both pressed and loose powder form.
Dewy: Dewy describes a wet look, shiny with a glistening finish and is suitable for every skin type. This property gives minimum coverage and does not mask imperfections. However, women with oily skin may not like this look as they have been fighting all their life to avoid looking shiny on their faces.
Line-minimising: Please refer to the term light-diffusing.
Satin-demi matte: Make up foundation with this label creates the most natural looking skin. It provides a flawless coverage like the matte foundation but without its powdery texture and allows the skin to have a smooth finished look.
Microsphere: A scientific term to describe tiny microscopic particles ingredient.
Nanosphere: Please refer to Microsphere.
Non-comedogenic: It does not clog pores.
Oil-free: Make up foundation that is oil-free has a special H2O based formulation for oily skin and uses silicone particles in place of moisturising elements.
Creme to powder: The foundation will glide on like a cream on your skin and dries rapidly thus eliminating the need to set with powder.
Foundation stick: A foundation stick looks like a giant concealer stick but is softer to the touch. The stick is easier to use and blends well.
Matte: Matte is a flat colour that will not reflect light with a powdery texture. Matte makes your skin looks dull if you do not use a blusher and is suitable for oily skin type. Matte however provides a shine free appearance. It has to be applied with a light hand or else it can look heavy when overdone.
Maximum coverage: Maximum coverage gives an opaque coverage and is best for skin that are less than perfect. It disguises minor imperfections and even some birthmarks and moles. You will not need a concealer if you are using this foundation type.
Pore minimising: Pore minimising refers to a property that deflects light from imperfections and controls your oil glands. It is suitable for acne sufferers and people with large pores and oily skin type.
Sheer: Sheer is a property that provides minimal coverage. This property is usually found more in a moisturiser than in foundation and is used to even out skin tone. Products with this label are more suited to people with clear skin as it does not cover freckles, blemishes or darkness around the eyes.
2-in-1: 2-in-1 products can be used dry and dusted on your face to provide light coverage, or it may be applied with a wetted sponge for greater coverage.
UV filters: UV filters protect your skin against the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays. Products with UV filters give protection measured by the SPF number. Dermatologists recommend the minimum protection of any UV filter products to be at least SPF 15, or it may be less than ideal.
Velvet: Velvet is a property that has a rich but not too matte texture and provides good coverage. The make up product with this property is suitable for use in evening make up.
Wet/Dry: You can experiment with two looks from one tub. Apply it dry for a lighter silky finish and wet for more coverage.
